The death of Peter Ucko

I will follow this announcement with further news and obituaries about Peter Ucko, who made major contributions to our understanding of the figurines found at Near East archaeological sites--including Catalhoyuk--as well as many other important contributions. Ucko is also well known as an anti-apartheid activist, a role that created considerable controversy. More soon.

I'm saddened to announce the passing of Prof. Peter Ucko, recently retired as director of the Institute of Archaeology at University College London, key player in the founding of the World Archaeological Congress, and general editor of the Institute publications series that we publish. He died at home in London Thursday June 14.
